FAQs
Why did you start Kentucky Alchemy?
We’ve always loved candles and thought making them would be a fun hobby. The candle making process turned out to be much more scientific than we realized, which made it much more interesting. Within a few months of playing around with different waxes and scents, we decided to create a candle that we’d want to buy. A candle made with premium products but at an affordable price point. A candle that is made to be burned and enjoyed.
We’ve both lived in and traveled to many places outside Kentucky, and returning to Louisville as adults has given us a greater appreciation for the best of the Bluegrass State. We hope our candles reflect that.
What do I need to know about my candle?
We recommend trimming the wick to ¼ inch before lighting. The first time you light your candle it’s best to let it burn for 3 hours. Because the wax we use is so slow burning there will be some wax hang-up on the sides in those first few burns. This is normal for our candles and as you burn your candle any remaining wax on the sides will melt. For safety reasons, do not burn your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time, keep away from children, pets, clumsy people, and drafts.
Most importantly, light it and enjoy it! Don’t wait for a date in the future to light it. Besides, candles are best within 1-2 years of purchase. While your candle won’t expire the same way that food does, the scent will slowly start to fade.
What kind of wax do you use?
Our candles are made with a blend of coconut and apricot waxes. We spent many months testing a range of waxes and combinations (including soy, beeswax, and paraffin to name a few of the most well known waxes), and this was our absolute favorite. We chose it because it’s a slow burning, clean-burning wax, resulting in a consistently strong scent throw with minimal soot. It is also toxin-free, paraben-free, and phthalate free.
What kind of wicks do you use?
We use environmentally friendly, coreless wicks made of braided cotton and paper filaments to provide burn stability and reduce curling. They are clean burning which help minimize mushrooming, smoke, and soot. Before each lighting, we recommend trimming the wick down to ¼ of an inch. This will reduce any soot hang up on the inside of the vessel and prolong the life of the candle.
What kind of fragrance oil do you use?
We only use clean fragrance oils. That means our oils do not contain any of the following: carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, organ toxins or acute toxins.
Do you actually pour the candles by hand?
Yes we do and we love it! We pour candles in small batches once or twice a week from our workshop in Louisville, KY. We throw on our aprons and a peppy playlist and mix and pour for a few hours.
Where do you ship?
We are currently shipping to the contiguous United States with the plans to expand in the future.
Do you live outside of the lower 48 and really want a candle? Send us a message and we will see what we can do!
I live in Louisville, do you offer local pick up?
Yes! If you are in Louisville, KY and prefer to pick up your order, use the promo code "LOCAL" at checkout to remove the shipping charge. We will contact you directly to confirm pickup details.
Do you do custom orders?
Absolutely! Contact us and let’s get the conversation started.
Can I reuse my container?
Yes, and we hope you do! After they are cleaned, the julep cups can be used for cocktails, and we have used ours as flower vases. The ceramic candles make great planters, especially for succulents.
